This is the tenth year of artistic cooperation between Wrocław and Dresden! Thanks to the support of the Departments of Culture of two neighboring regions—Lower Silesia and Saxony—and partners from municipal cultural institutions, we are co-organizing another edition of the residency exchange for artists associated with the printmaking community.

This is the tenth year of artistic cooperation between Wrocław and Dresden! Thanks to the support of the Departments of Culture of two neighboring regions—Lower Silesia and Saxony—and partners from municipal cultural institutions, we are co-organizing another edition of a residency exchange for artists associated with the printmaking community.

In April, during a month-long residency in Wrocław, we will host Ana Pireva, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and a visual artist. Her works have been presented at numerous individual and collective exhibitions in Germany and abroad – they can be found, among others, in the archives of Künstlerhaus München, the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, and the AMATERAS Foundation, as well as in private collections. The person who will go to one of the oldest and most important printmaking studios in Europe – Grafikwerkstatt – will be announced in June, after the end of an open competition for local artists (the call for applications starts on May 6).

Who is the Dresden-based artist?

Ana Pireva is a Bulgarian visual artist, born in 1995 in Shumen. She graduated from the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HfBK). She lives and works in Dresden.

Artistic research is central to her practice, including a research project entitled “Hands of Perception: Drawing with and on Paper,” which explored the work processes in paper and lithography workshops through practice-based research. The project was presented at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and culminated in the publication of a scientific article.

In addition to her artistic activities, Ana is the co-founder of erlenwerk, a studio dedicated to traditional printing techniques and papermaking, as well as the exhibition project Pressure me in Dresden. She is also a member of the International Association of Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA) and the Association of Bulgarian Art Therapists (ABAT). At the same time, she works as a mediator of contemporary art in a museum context.

Residency at the Municipal Gallery studio

In Wrocław, Ana will focus on workshop activities at the Municipal Gallery studio on Ruska Street. Pireva will also be a guest at several studios of the Department of Graphic Arts at the Wrocław Academy of Fine Arts. The results of her work in Wrocław will be presented during an exhibition at the Recepcja Café Club at the end of April.

Ana Pireva was selected by the City of Dresden. The residency is organized by the Culture Departments of the partner cities: Wrocław and Dresden. Exchange partners: Grafikwerkstatt in Dresden, Wrocław Institute of Culture, Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Municipal Gallery in Wrocław, and Domek Miedziorytnika.
