The summer weather has brought a wealth of events, gatherings and initiatives to our courtyard. One of these includes work on the courtyard archive as part of Rafał Skwarek’s MagiC Carpets residency.
Rafał Skwarek is this year’s resident at AIR Wro, working in photography and the performing arts. As part of the MagiC Carpets platform, in partnership with GUA Collective, the artist has set out to explore the history of one of Wrocław’s most culturally rich areas. The courtyard at Ruska 46 is a space teeming with artists’ studios, craft workshops and foundations. Using photography, Skwarek will study and portray the people who have helped shape our artistic nook, both in the past and today.
The project is currently in the phase of gathering material, learning about the history and the people who contribute to the artistic legacy of the courtyard every day. Rafał also took part in a workshop led by Ola Podlejska – an art historian and specialist in archival research – focusing on working with archival materials and utilising institutional collections such as the city archives and libraries.
However, this is just the beginning of our courtyard adventure. We have more meetings and conversations ahead of us with people connected to Ruska 46. We’re looking for stories, memories, photographs and traces of the artistic activities that have shaped the character of this place over the years.
