You can’t stream this. “3Hz” invites you to discover Wrocław’s alternative scene

From the end of August until December, the three venues of the Wrocław Institute of Culture – Barbara, Recepcja and Klub pod Kolumnami – will become a hub for the Wrocław alternative scene. The ‘3Hz’ concert series will feature artists whose work spans electroacoustic music, ambient, improvisation, electronic music, dream pop and alt-rock. This is an invitation to switch off for a while and join us for a unique musical event.
10 events, 6 concerts, 4 meetings and 3 venues. The ‘3Hz’ series grew out of the belief that worthwhile musical events do not need large stages. The most extraordinary experiences often arise in intimate spaces, where artists and the audience are separated by only a short distance, and the concert becomes more than just a presentation of music – it becomes a shared moment that happens only once.
‘3Hz’ is rooted in the belief in the uniqueness of a live encounter: the energy of a specific place, the presence of specific people, and emotions that cannot be recreated, rebroadcast or streamed. Each event exists for just one evening – a great reason to disconnect from the internet for a while, look up from your phone screen and truly find yourself right in the thick of what’s happening.
The project also provides an excuse to spend a little more time together after the concert – to go out on the town together, talk about what we’ve heard and experienced, and get involved in the local community centred around the alternative music scene.
Who are we meeting up with offline?
The ‘3Hz’ programme takes you on a journey through the various facets of Wrocław’s alternative music scene – from electroacoustic music, ambient and improvisation to dream pop, electronic music and alt-rock. It brings together artists who are only just gaining recognition alongside those who have been consistently forging their own paths for years. However, the best way to experience their music is to see them live.
The series will begin on 28 August at Barbara with a performance by Agata Zemla, a composer of contemporary electroacoustic music, and kacpradhl, a multi-instrumentalist and producer who builds his live acts around synthesisers, acoustic instruments and live-recorded samples. The music will be accompanied by visuals by Wiktoria Richel and Maria Mikołajewska. On 1 September, Młyn– a Wrocław-based trio blending electronica with jazz and ambient – will perform at Recepcja.
On 26 September, Barbara will host the collective Późno, whose work straddles the line between concert and installation, innerinnerlife – a solo project by Tomasz Szpaderski, co-founder of the band KAMP! – and Supper Studio. On 6 October, Bagdad, an alt-rock band from Wrocław, will perform at Recepcja, whilst on 30 October, the Polish-Ukrainian duo Kadabra Dyskety Kusaje, whose sound moves between dream pop, experimental electronica and references to tradition, will play at Klub pod Kolumnami. The concert section of the programme will conclude at Nadodrze on 27 November with Vojto Monteur – guitarist, producer and co-founder of EABS, who blends guitar sounds with synthesisers, electronica and improvisation.
Let’s talk about music
The ‘3Hz’ programme will be complemented by four accompanying events. On 17 September, Beata Zając and Zofia Pysz will talk at Recepcja about their ceramic sound system, which explores the use of ceramics as a medium and conduit for sound. At Klub pod Kolumnami, two events in the ‘History of Music’ series will take place: on 16 October, a talk on the history of electronic music, and on 4 December, a discussion on music producers – the ‘grey eminences’ behind the tracks we know by heart. Meanwhile, on 12 November, Barbara will host a discussion entitled ‘Turn it up!’ on the alternative sound of Wrocław and the people, places and conditions that enable the local scene to flourish.
