Sarah Steuer – resident of the Grafikwerkstatt in Wrocław

Celebrating nearly a decade of artistic collaboration between Wrocław and Dresden, the annual residency exchange for graphic artists continues to foster creativity and cultural exchange. Supported by the Departments of Culture of Lower Silesia and Saxony, along with key cultural institutions, the 9th edition promises another enriching experience for printmakers.

In April, Wrocław eagerly awaits the arrival of Sarah Steuer, a talented master’s student from the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. Specializing in lithography and etching, Sarah brings her unique artistic vision to the vibrant streets of Wrocław for a month-long residency. Meanwhile, a local artist will soon embark on a reciprocal journey to Dresden, selected through an open call starting on May 6, 2024.

Who is the Dresden-based artist?

Sarah Steuer was born in Constance on Lake Constance in 1998. In 2020, she studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Paris in the studio of Wernher Bouwens and also did an internship at Idem Paris. A year ago, she defended her diploma with Helen Verhoeven at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. A recipient of the prestigious art prize from the Siegert Foundation, Sarah’s dedication to her craft shines through her exploration of various printmaking techniques. Her works, characterized by rich contrasts and intricate compositions, serve as a testament to her quest for artistic expression.

Residence around classical printing techniques

What is the plan for a month’s stay in Wrocław? Sarah made it clear in her application that it is the proximity to water and the medieval charm of Wrocław that reminds the artist of her own home (by the Lake Constance). She is currently encountering sacred compositions and ornamentation in her artistic work. Hence the idea to devote herself creatively to medieval themes and explore them through drawing, etching, woodcut and lithography during her residency in Wrocław. The City Gallery on Ruska Street and the Department of Artistic Graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław will serve as Sarah’s creative hubs, where she’ll collaborate with local artists and share her experiences.

‘In Between Two’ Steuer exhibition at the gallery of Klub pod Kolumnami

At the same time, the artist will have the opportunity to showcase her latest lithographic and etching works to the Polish public for the first time with her original exhibition ‘In Between Two’ at the gallery of Klub pod Kolumnami. We will get to know the artist in person during the ceremonial opening, which will take place on 18 April at 7 pm. The presentation at the gallery will run until 25 May and will be an opportunity to see the direction in which the young Dresden-based graphic artist is heading.
